24 Hour Nursing

Sarah NursePenmellyn Veterinary Group due to modern purpose built facilities is in the fortunate position to provide 24 hour nursing care to all animals entrusted to our care.

The Equine Department has facilities designed to the highest standards as defined by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons which allows 24 Hour Nursing care, supervised at all times by a veterinary surgeon. Each hospitalised patient is allocated to a named veterinary surgeon who is in charge of treatment and care at all times until the patient leaves the facilities. This case vet then communicates all relevant issues with the patient's owner/keeper during the horses stay either directly or through a dedicated nurse on his/her behalf. Written discharge instructions are supplied by the responsible veterinary surgeon to the horse owner/keeper at time of discharge and a letter is sent with a report to the referring veterinary surgeon.

The outcome of most medical or surgical emergencies is very much depending on the standard of aftercare and 24 Hour Nursing is a key element to most successful procedures.

Visiting Consultants

visiting consultantsPenmellyn Veterinary Group due to modern purpose built facilities is in the fortunate position to perform a wide range of surgical procedures through in house expertise . However, there are specialist medical and surgical procedures that require advanced qualifications and expertise and we are proud to have access to a team of highly qualified and respected consultants.

Depending on circumstances these visiting consultants see cases by appointment at St. Columb Major on a first opinion or referral basis.

This service saves horses and their owners having to travel long distances with follow up and aftercare all provided locally either by us or the referring veterinary surgeon.

It remains our ambitious aim to eventually employ specialist consultants to cover all aspects of equine veterinary medicine on a full time basis. These people are rare on the ground and rightfully demand high remunerations so future demands by clients and referring veterinary surgeons will decide if and when this dream can come true.
