Equine Referrals
Dear Colleague,
Thank you very much for choosing to refer a horse, pony or donkey to Penmellyn Veterinary Group or if you are contemplating doing so in the future.
We do offer a wide range of services to the horse owning public and are committed to providing an ethical referral service.
We are always happy to discuss cases with you and provide guidance on case management.
When referring a horse, pony or donkey please provide as much information as possible on clinical and economic background of the case so we can work out a plan of action to provide the most suitable treatment plan for each animal in partnership with owner/agent and referring veterinary surgeon.
Each case referred to us is allocated to a case veterinary surgeon who is responsible for treatment AND case management including all communications with referring veterinary surgeon/practice and horse owner/agent.
All enquiries for referrals and all out of hours telephone calls are handled in house so that the duty vet can contact you in the shortest possible time.
A full written report is sent by the case vet to the referring veterinary surgeon including discharge instructions and follow up treatment plan.
Although we are well equipped and can offer a wide range of skills and expertise, we are aware of our limitations and some cases will have to be referred to more specialized centres.
When asking for an estimate of a particular procedure please provide as much information on animal's weight, size and age including any other relevant details. All estimates will be supplied in writing following an inquiry and are valid for thirty days post request.
Please make sure that in case of insurance for veterinary fees that the owner/agent is aware of any exclusions and level of cover.
When a case in admitted we will need the passport to come with the animal and a declaration by the owner/agent as to whether the animal is intended for human consumption or not, or if no declaration made. If the animal might undergo a general anaesthetic the insurance company needs to be informed BEFORE so please raise awareness with your client in these matters. Animals that are booked in for a surgical procedure under general anaesthetic will need to arrive in clean condition and without shoes if possible. Shoes can be removed by us and horses cleaned but this will incur additional fees.
