Equine
Penmellyn Veterinary Group with its Equine Department has been recognized as the "Horse Vets" in Cornwall
for over a hundred years while also covering farm
and small animal work
From the very early days at Lower East Street, the practice has regularly employed equine veterinary surgeons committed to equine work with a natural focus on working horses . As times changed, so did the type of horse the practice was looking after and although we still see the occasional working horse, it is the modern leisure horses that make up the every growing client base. This constant demand in recent years led to the development of a dedicated Equine Department supported by dedicated Equine Veterinary Surgeons within Penmellyn Veterinary Group.
Our background still is genuine rural practice so our vets rely on a no nonsense, hands on approach to be able to provide the best possible service to all our current and future clients . We look after Miniature Horses, Donkeys, Family Ponies, Cobs of all sizes, Show jumpers, Event Horses, Dressage Horses, Flat and National Hunt Race Horses, Shire Horses and Suffolk Punches and not to forget all types of horses used for endurance riding. Arabian Horses ,Thourghbred Horses , Warmblood Horses like Hanoverians, Trakheners or Dutch Warmbloods are as popular with our clients as relatively new breeds like American Quarter Horses or Appaloosas. Shetland Ponies and all types of Welsh Ponies are bred, shown and ridden in Cornwall and it always is a pleasure to see our clients succeed with their animals at the Royal Cornwall Show and other events held in the West country or the UK.
Our client's horses and ponies compete in all matters of disciplines, from Classic Dressage to Natural Horsemanship, from Polo, Hunting, Point to Pointing to Western Riding, not to forget the Driving Horses, we see them all.
The practice plays a very active role in all matters of Stud Medicine, we perform Artificial Insemination with Chilled or Frozen Semen and our facilities fulfil the requirements as laid out by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons(RCVS). In all the medical disciplines that we are involved in ,we aim to provide the most comprehensive service possible at a cost acceptable to the owner or keeper. We are aware that Equine Veterinary Medicine and Surgery are ever changing due to progress in science and technology and our practice does spend significant amounts of time and resources on keeping up to date.
Equine Practice in the 21st century has to cater for a very diverse client base and we firmly believe in modern evidence based medicine rooted in traditional values. Good client communication and education are essential to provide an efficient and effective service that people understand and can effort.
Our presence on the internet and the development of our website almost exclusively serves that purpose and we appreciate any form of feedback so to be able to improve our service to you and the wider horse owning public.
