A30 Referrals
Surgical Referrals
A30 Referrals is the small animal referral division of Penmellyn Vet Group. It was launched with the arrival of Colin Whiting BVSc CertSAS MRCVS in 2007, seeing orthopaedic, spinal and soft tissue surgical cases referred from practices in Cornwall and South Devon. A30referrals has a firm ethos of providing local expertise and support to local practices. Colin is readily available for advice to colleagues, by phone or email, and provides a free verbal radiograph reporting service also. All cases are discussed without obligation, including happily providing tips on how to repair fractures in your own practice.
Colin has particular interests in;-
-
Cruciate surgery - (performing extracapsular, closing wedge and Slocum TPLO, with case experience of over 500 stifle procedures)
-
Ear, Nose and throat surgery - including TECA-LBO and Laryngeal tie-back
-
Spinal surgery - for interevertebral disc disease including hemi-, mini-hemilaminectomy and cervical ventral slot and distraction fusion techniques for 'wobbler' cases
-
Fracture repair - including ASIF kits range from 1.5mm to 5.5mm, as well as external fixation techniques
-
Arthroscopy - a 2.4 and 2.7mm arthroscope helps with imaging and minimally invasive surgery of elbows and shoulders.
-
Multimodal pain-relief
Referring a case
At A30 Referrals, we aim to make the referral process as simple as possible for referring vets, clients and patients. We know that all clinicians are busy in practice; so we have a faxable referral form for vet, clients and patints details and a brief summary of presenting problem, to be accompanied by releveant clinical notes- a full referral letter is not necessary. Cases are also accepted via email, and by phone. If Colin is not operating, he will always come directly to the phone to answer colleagues advice calls. We ask that any urgent cases are referred by phonecall, so we can make urgent emergency admission preparations in the clinical team and adjust our theatre list accordingly.

Cardiology Referrals
Dr Mark Patteson (MA, VetMB, PHD, DVC, Cert VR. MRCVS) is a RCVS specialist in veterinary cardiology. He comes to our practice once a month to see Cardiology and Imaging cases referred from practices in Cornwall and South Devon. As the medical management of all forms of heart disease improves and expands, Mark is often able to extend good quality life periods for his cardiac patients. His imaging and diagnostics skills with ultraonography, echocardiography and halter monitoring particularly help him to give clients the clearest possible information on their pet. Appointments with Mark can be made in exactly the same way as those with Colin- by fax, email or phone.
Ophthalmology Referrals
Jim Carter (BVetMed DVOphthal MRCVS) is the leading Veterinary Ophthalmologist in the South West, having studied veterinary ophthalmology to the highest level (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate and Diploma). He visits Penmellyn fortnightly, bringing advanced diagnostic equipment and expertise with him. He is also a member of the BVA/KC eye scoring panel, qualified to scrutinise and certificate pedigree animals for breeding under the scheme aimed to reduce incidence of genetic disease.
A referral practice operates as a partnership with all of its referring practices. we take that relationship seriously, and if there is any support you need from us, we aim to provide it ourselves or assist you until you get it from case referral to equipment sourcing, from technique advice to case discussion.
